Latitude

It came to me as I was driving
in the rain almost dark
headlights were on
traffic had been heavy
backed up but now
it was moving again
I seldom turn on the radio
I prefer the sounds of the world
and the hum of my own mind
I suppose

I think almost as well
behind the wheel as I do
in the shower
contemplate
that's what I do
It's a step or two
past thinking
That's when things come to me

It came to me as I was driving
the way things come to me
sometimes
in the shower
or while I'm mowing
and other times when I cannot
stop to write down on solid paper
things that flitter about in my mind
and almost every time
I tell myself
-and I always believe it, every time - I really do -
that I'll remember
of course I will
how could I forget something as profound
as that
and I have lamented and regretted and
vainly searched the littered playgrounds
of my own mind
and found not even remnants
nothing
only the lingering sensation of
the conviction born from
the original idea
- whatever the hell it was.
It came to me as I was driving.
